Fair Trade Week 2013
WHEN: May 20-23, 2013
WHERE: Kerckhoff and Jimmy's coffeehouses
WHAT:
The purpose of our Fair Trade Week is to raise awareness about Fair Trade options on campus and to help students understand how buying Fair Trade impacts the lives of individuals around the world. We will be tabling at ASUCLA coffeehouses to raise awareness and help get students excited about Fair Trade options. In exchange for filling out a 5 question survey, students will also receive a free reusable Fair Trade coffee tumbler (shown to the left). The discount received for brining a reusable tumbler or mug almost negates the price difference between Fair Trade and non-Fair Trade coffee!
The ultimate goal of our Fair Trade Efforts is to have UCLA eventually become a Fair Trade University. We have currently completed four of the five steps required to achieve this status!
To get involved with our campaign to promote Fair Trade products at UCLA, contact Niran Somasundaram at niran.somasundaram@gmail.com, Tenny Arlen at tennyarlen@gmail.com and Joanna Wheaton at joannawheaton@gmail.com

Fossil Free UCLA Presents: Do the Math Documentary Screening
It’s simple math: we can burn less than 565 more gigatons of carbon dioxide and stay below 2°C of warming — anything more than that risks catastrophe for life on earth. The only problem? Fossil fuel corporations now have 2,795 gigatons in their reserves, five times the safe amount. And they’re planning to burn it all — unless we rise up to stop them.
Do the Math is about the rising movement in the United States to change the terrifying maths of the climate crisis and challenge the fossil fuel industry. The film follows 350.org founder Bill McKibben on last November's Do the Math tour. The tour reached over 25,000 people at sold-out shows in 21 cities across the country (and tens of thousands more online). Part TEDTalk, part revival meeting, the Do the Math show is built off of an article called "Global Warming's Terrifying New Math" that Bill had published in Rolling Stone earlier in the summer. The piece became one of the most viral stories ever published by the magazine, garnering over 125,000 likes on Facebook and millions of page views.
The film made its premiere on Earth Night, April 21st, and will be screened across the country as part of a grassroots push this month. Please join Fossil Free UCLA for this educational and inspiring screening and learn how to get involved in the global movement!!!

Date: Monday, May 20th (Week 8)

Screening starts at 7:15 PM.
Screening finishes at 8:00 PM. (Film is 42 minutes long.)
Discussion until 9:00 PM.
Location: Humanities A32
Cost: FREE! And there will be food of the free sort as well.

Sign up for the Student Food Collective's Food Buying Club!
A food buying club pools the collective buying power of a group of people to purchase in bulk and at wholesale prices from local producers and distributors. These large-scale purchases are then divided among the members to provide affordable, fresh, locally-sourced foods. This differs from a CSA in that the members democratically participate in choosing what products they are interested in purchasing. Essentially, it's a food co-op without a storefront!
The Student Food Collective is working to create the foundations for a food buying club right here at UCLA. For Spring 2013, the FBC is meeting every Tuesday at 6-6:30PM in Humanities A48, during which we coordinate orders and pick-ups. If after taking the survey you want to hear more, come join us!
To learn more & be added to our mailing list (through which we send out order information), fill out our interest survey here. To stay updated & get connected with members in the FBC, join our Facebook group!

Fair Trade Resolution Unanimously Approved!
On Tuesday, April 16th, E3 and General Representative 3 Yasar Mohebi's Fair Trade resolution was passed by UCLA's Undergraduate Students Association (USAC) with a vote of 10-0-0!
The resolution affirms that USAC supports the values of Fair Trade products, and calls on the UCLA administration to maintain Fair Trade status once attained, to provide Fair Trade products in their facilities whenever possible, and to make efforts to increase the awareness and consumption of Fair Trade products at UCLA.
By passing this resolution, we are one step away from attaining Fair Trade University status! Whoop whoop!

Support E3's Responsible Investments Campaign in divesting UCLA from fossil fuels!!
What we do: Convince the UC Endowment fund (where UCLA invests its donations to give more money back to students) to divest from 15 companies that produce dirty sources of energy such as coal and fossil fuels.
Why it works: It's activism and finance at the same time. The endowment fund invests in thousands of companies, so divesting from 15 won't add much risk. It's a public statement against dirty energy, and large companies want to cater to their shareholders. Divestment worked to abolish apartheid in South Africa, and we're looking to do the same for dirty energy.
Want to get involved? Contact Alyssa Lee at alyssa.dabichi.lee@gmail.com!
Our campaign will meet right after E3 meetings, on Thursdays at 6:00PM outside of the Grand Ballroom.

First Meeting
I hope everyone has had a great and eventful Spring Break! E3's first meeting of the Spring Quarter will be Thursday, April 4th from 5-6PM in Ackerman 2412. We have plenty of events to look forward to this quarter including our Earth Month Celebration, Farmers' Market, and our Responsible Investments Campaign!
CSSC Spring Convergence at UC Berkeley
The California Student Sustainability Coalition (CSSC) is a statewide organization that unites, connects, supports, and empowers students across CA to transform their educational institutions and communities into models of ecological, economic, and social sustainability (Sound familiar? UCLA's E3 is actually the UCLA Chapter of CSSC!)
Inspired and motivated by Bill McKibben's 350.org campaign, our Responsible Investments Campaign is geared towards persuading our UC Board of Regents to divest from fossil fuels in order to create awareness about the urgency of the affects fossil fuels have towards our environment. For those interested in divestment, the CSSC Spring Convergence is a great way to put yourself around people with similar goals and motivate you and everyone else towards taking the initiative step towards a cleaner society.
It will be held at UC Berkeley from Friday April 26th to Sunday April 28th and it will cost $20 per person. This includes housing and food, you can get more information and sign up here.

The garden is expanding! Rather than increasing our square footage in the Sunset Canyon Recreation Center, the student garden is expanding into new territory: the north campus terrace (see map here). The food growing will be hosted in an array of wine barrel containers, specializing in herbs and salad greens in a new more accessible location near Campbell Hall and the North Campus Center patio.
The launch date will be early in Spring Quarter. Stay tuned! Please contact north campus garden coordinator, Alyssa Curran (aac1218@gmail.com) to get involved.
More information about the work weeks and the garden itself can be found on our Garden Page!
Weekly Round-Up!
The Monsanto Protection Act
A small provision in the Agricultural Appropriation Bill that protects genetically modified seeds from litigation in the face of health risks has spurred outrage and protest against Monsanto, a biotech giant.
New Chairman targets the Environmental Protection Agency
Chris Stewart, the new chairman of a key house subcommittee on the environment, is targeting the EPA as he finds it a very inefficient organization. This can potentially be a big headache for environmentalists, especially because he still doubts the effects humans have towards climate change. We can only hope that the Freshman Republican's actions and opinions are not taken too seriously.
Water Crisis in China?
It seems like China's coal plants are creating a water crisis as a majority of their plants lie in Northern China while only 20% of their water supplies are in the north. The dilemma here is that making these coal plants consume less water will cause them to decrease in efficiency and increase carbon emissions.

E3's Kinetic Dance Floor Featured on Daily Bruin!
Spearheaded by Rachel Woods-Robinson, E3 brought kinetic dance floors to the United States for the first time EVER! Check out the Daily Bruin's coverage of the event here.
These panels essentially harnessed the kinetic energy generated by dancers' moves. This energy was mainly used to charge cell phones in UCLA's Dance Marathon, which is a fundraiser for pediatric AIDS research. What better way to promote sustainable and clean energy through dancing, an activity everybody enjoys? As Rachel states "there is so much potential in this technology and for future renewable energy that can be inspired by this", all we really need is that initial first step. Huge props to Rachel for coordinating the dance floor into Dance Marathon and raising awareness of clean energy!
For more information about the campaign, contact: Rachel Woods-Robinson at rachellogoodbye@gmail.com and Joanna Wheaton at joannawheaton@gmail.com for more information!

Updates: Farmers' Market, American Meat, Student Garden = Success!
Farmers Market
With tons of students showing up at our Farmers' Market, all of our vendors had an incredible time selling their fresh organic produce! Our most popular vendor, the almond vendor brought an array of different types of nuts packaged with seasonings ranging from chile, lime, and garlic, and various types of pecan and almond butters. I think it is safe to say this vendor was the star of the show! Shout-outs to UCLA's Random Voices for the amazing acapella and for putting on a show in Bruin Plaza!
I think we can gauge and confirm our success through our Co-Chair's very own words "I'm going to go ahead and declare the market a RAGING SUCCESS!!!! E3, GenRep2, and ASUCLA would like to thank everyone who came out to support our local farmers, to the a capella groups who so beautifully serenaded us, and to the students who volunteered at the market. Muchas gracias and GET STOKED FOR THE NEXT MARKET ON FEBRUARY 27TH!!!!"
More information the facebook page!
American Meat
Another success of the day was American Meat, a documentary about the industrialized meat industry, the farmers that feed us, and the processes of producing organic food. Turn-out of the event was great and the free Chipotle and Native Food's seemed to have vanished like it never existed! We have to give some thanks to one of E3's hardest workers, Alyssa Lee for setting this event up and to everyone else that helped! Learn more at the facebook page!
UCLA Sunset Recreation Garden
The big meet-up at the Sunset Recreation Center was also a huge success. We had a huge turn-out and had tons of students from different organizations help out. We made a total of four beds and two compost bins, and all that's left to do is plant all the herbs, vegetables, and whatever you want! Remember, this is a community garden, so feel free to join us, help out, and plant whatever you want to! Check out some pictures and learn more from the Campus Garden Blog at UCLA!

E3's Yes on Prop 37 campaign in The Daily Bruin
Eitan Arom's editorial about Prop 37 discusses E3's Yes on Prop 37 campaign and includes quotes from Campaign Co-Coordinator Niran Somasundaram. Click here to read the article.
Yes on Prop 37 - The Right To Know Act
This election season, E3 will be working hard to encourage students to vote Yes on Prop 37. Prop 37 aims to make it so that foods altered by genetically modified organisms (GMOs) will be labeled as such. It is also known as the "Right to Know" act because it will increase awareness of GMOs in foods. From now until election day on Tuesday November 6th, E3 will be doing various events to promote awareness of this proposition.
For more information about GMOs and the state-wide Label GMOs campaign, click here.
If you are 18 but have not yet registered to vote, please take a couple moments to fill out the CA voter registration form. More voter registration information can be found here.

Join Our Anti-Fracking Rally in Los Angeles!
WHEN: Wednesday, September 2nd from 3-7pm
WHERE: The grassy area on the west side of Ocean Ave where it intersects with Santa Monica Blvd
FOR MORE INFO: Rachel Woods-Robinson at rachellogoodbye@gmail.com
Check out this article about our rally in the Santa Monica Patch.
Fracking is a multifaceted environmental catastrophy; it is a hazardous procedure with hazardous effects and, in the end, has a hazardous use. It is contaminating our drinking water, our air, and the environment. And though it is going on right here right now in Baldwin Hills and directly affects us, WE ARE NOT INFORMED.
On September 12, local grassroots organizers across the country will hold simultaneous rallies to spread awareness about the status quo of fracking. The nationwide event is put on by Frackfree America and Neogap, found here.
This rally will stand by a common mission and focus on (1) unifying like-minded groups, (2) educating the LA community and ultimately (3) initiating a FRACKING BAN in California.
WHAT IS FRACKING?
Fracking, short for Induced Hydraulic Fracturing, is a procedure of natural gas extraction. First, gas companies drill deep wells into the ground and then inject millions of gallons of secret “fracking fluid” – a mixture of water, sand and unspecified chemicals – into shale rock at high speeds. These chemicals crack open the rock and open fissures, releasing natural gas up through the well. The gas is then separated from large amounts of wastewater.
This procedure of fracking began in 1998, and soon become widespread. In 2005, the Bush Administration passed a provision known as the Halliburton Loophole that exempted oil and gas companies from the Safe Water Drinking Act. In other words, these companies no longer are required to disclose the chemicals they spew into the ground and whether they use fracking to extract gas.
Though it has been going on for years, the horrors of fracking were really first brought to media attention by Josh Fox’s documentary Gasland (available on the handy dandy Netflix dot com). This film and the media response (as well as the attempted suppression) that followed brought attention specifically to the Midwest and East Coast. However, last May a local oil company began drilling wells and fracking in Baldwin Hills, just miles from Los Angeles!! Uhh oops, that’s right next to the San Andreas fault.
A 3.4 earthquake shook our salt shakers last night. Last Monday, a 3.2 quake rattled Beverly Hills and the week before several hundred small earthquakes hit just south of LA. Though it is unclear what caused these specific quakes, there is a correlation between increased hydraulic fracking for natural gas and earthquakes.
Earthquakes are just ONE of many adverse effects of hydraulic fracking. This is a quick summary of what else it does:
• One procedure uses 1-8 million gallons of water, and a well can be fracked up to 18 times
• Average wells are 8,000 feet deep, while drinking water aquifers are about 1,000. Chemicals leak into drinking water and directly leak methane and “fracking fluid” into the groundwater
• Contaminated drinking water, which has been called to attention by multiple accounts and videos of FLAMMABLE TAP WATER http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U01EK76Sy4A
• Drilling process requires huge amounts of energy, with a maximum Energy Payback Ratio (EPR) of 4.5
• Gas has to be separated from wastewater on the surface. Wastewater is then evaporated into the atmosphere, releasing VOC’s and producing ground level ozone
• Specific mixtures of chemicals are unknown thanks to the Halliburton loophole, but we know 750 different chemicals are used including hydrochloric acid, sulfuric acid, formaldehyde, and other toxins and carcinogens.
• Surface contamination from spills
• Potential release of radioactive materials
• Natural gas is still a FOSSIL FUEL. It emits 30% less CO2 than oil, but that still contributes to global warming
• A lack of research and understanding of long term health/environmental effects, and, scariest in my opinion, a lack of media attention of the severity of these effects
WE CAN STOP IT!
Gas companies have a monopoly not just on our fuel but on our flow of information. Natural gas is portrayed to be the new fuel of America… we don’t even need to import it! It is also praised in politics for generating “new jobs” (which could just as easily be in the solar industry?). Even its name, the branding of the word “natural,” is conniving trickery. The gas may be naturally produced, but it’s extraction and its horrific effects on our health and environment are NOT NATURAL.
It’s scary what big companies are getting away with, without our consent but worst of all without informing us! With elections coming up, it is important that we are knowledgeable of what is going on in our own communities, especially when the issue has a direct impact on our lives. It’s up to US to inform society. By working together grassroots organizations, like Frackfree America and Neogap, have spread the word, have campaigned for fracking bans, and as of May have successfully banned fracking in Vermont! (only 49 more to go, vamos!)
Oil companies brought fracking to LA so let’s bring this RALLY and this REALITY along with it to get them out.

For LA's fourth CicLAvia 10 miles of roadways will temporarily close to car traffic and open for recreational purposes. From Boyle Heights to Downtown, MacArthur Park to East Hollywood, El Pueblo/Olvera Street, and South LA, CicLAvia encourages Angelenos to not only make active use of their streets, but to rediscover the roadways and neighborhoods that too often go unnoticed in a car.
Inspired by Ciclovía, the original, weekly street closure event in Bogotá, Colombia, CicLAvia opens LA streets to pedestrians and bicyclists, creating a temporary web of public space on which residents of Los Angeles can walk, bike, socialize, celebrate and learn more about their own city.

The Ian Somerhalder Foundation
In 2007 the country of Estonia launched the "Let’s Do It" Clean Up Initiative where 50,000 Estonians came together to clean up the country in one day and accomplished what would have taken the government 3 years and 22 millions EU. The initiative collected 10,000 tons of trash that was polluting their communities.
The Ian Somerhalder Foundation aims to join more than 2000 schools in a state wide effort to clean up local communities throughout the state of California while supporting the clean up efforts of partner organisationson Saturday, April 21st, 2012 to Clean Up the state of California.
The Ian Somerhalder Foundation’s "Let’s Get Dirty" initiative aims to create a shift of consciousness in how we perceive ourselves as delineated entities from the environment and highlight how our daily choices as consumers create the environmental issues humanity is facing. It’s about understanding that every choice you make is a vote either for or against the kind of world you wish to live in. It’s about harnessing the power of choice.

Garden Mentorship Project in the Daily Bruin!
Project Greenlight at the UCLA Lab School Starting Friday 2/17!
Starting this Friday 2/17, E3's Project Greenlight will be working with 4-12 year-old elementary students in the UCLA Lab School's after-school program.
WHERE: UCLA Lab School (visit the Project Greenlight page for a map). If you are not sure how to get here, meet at Wilson Plaza at 2:45 and we will walk over together. If you get lost, call Jean Vo (408.547.7853).
WHEN: Fridays from 3-4pm
WHAT: Project Green Light is an E3 initiative to spread sustainability education to elementary school children and get them excited about helping to preserve the environment. Through group workshops conducted during class, after school, and when school groups visit the UCLA campus, children are able to learn about a diverse range of sustainability topics depending on what the teacher deems most relevant including energy efficiency, alternative energy, waste management, and water conservation. E3 members get to actually teach these workshops and interact with the children to inspire them to learn more about our planet and its systems.
